Shanghai hits 40 million TEU milestone as volumes grow at Chinese ports

From January to October 2024, Chinese ports handled a total of 276.4 million TEUs, reflecting a 7.6% year-on-year growth.

In October, Shanghai Port recorded a container throughput of 4.15 million TEUs, up by 3.8% compared to the same month last year, while Ningbo Zhoushan Port processed 3.31 million TEUs, marking a 12.9% year-on-year increase. Shenzhen was the third busiest port in China with 2.8 million TEUs in October.

Regarding the year-to-date volumes, Shanghai reached the 40 million TEU milestone, having already moved 43.25 million TEUs in 2024. Ningbo Zhousan Port is in the second place with 32.83 million TEUs, while Shenzhen and Qingdao follow with 27.66 million TEUs and 25.76 million TEUs respectively.

Shenzhen Port has shown the largest year-on-year growth among the Chinese ports, with a 14.9% increase, followed by Beibu Gulf, Ningbo Zhousan, Qingdao and Shanghai ports.

On the lower end of the rankings, Xiamen and Beibu Gulf have each handled 7.42 million TEUs so far in 2024, with Beibu Gulf showing a significant 14.3% year-over-year growth but Xiamen reporting a 4% decline.
