Marking a historic milestone in maritime decarbonization efforts, China has officially commenced commercial operations of its 10,000-ton-class pure electric smart container ship, setting a new standard for zero-emission operations along critical coastal routes.
China has taken a giant leap forward in the maritime industry’s decarbonization journey by officially putting into commercial operation the country’s largest 10,000-ton-class pure electric smart container ship. This move sends a strong signal regarding the electrification trend across vital coastal shipping corridors.
According to Xinhua News Agency, the mega-vessel, named Ning Yuan Dian Kun, embarked on its maiden commercial voyage on April 15, departing from the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port complex to the Port of Jiaxing in Zhejiang province.
Technical Breakthroughs and Operational Capabilities
Independently researched and developed by the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI), the Ning Yuan Dian Kun boasts a fully electric propulsion system designed to deliver zero carbon emissions while simultaneously enhancing operational efficiency.
In terms of specifications, the vessel has an overall length (LOA) of 127.8 meters, a molded breadth of 21.6 meters, a design draft of 6.2 meters, and a carrying capacity of 742 TEU. The “heart” of its propulsion system consists of two 875 kW permanent magnet synchronous motors, powered by 10 containerized battery units with a total capacity of approximately 20,000 kWh.
It is estimated that deploying this vessel will cut CO2 emissions by 1,462 tons annually, realizing the ultimate operational goal of “zero emissions, zero noise, and zero pollution.”
Smart Ecosystem and Design Optimization
The Ning Yuan Dian Kun is not only “green” but also exceptionally smart. The vessel integrates advanced systems, including intelligent routing technology, autonomous collision avoidance features, high-precision tracking, and seamless ship-shore-cloud integrated control capabilities.
To solve the charging time dilemma, the ship utilizes a dual-mode energy replenishment system. The combination of high-voltage shore power technology and a rapid battery container swapping process significantly boosts operational flexibility and optimizes vessel turnaround times.
Innovation is also evident in its hydrodynamic design and cargo handling capabilities. An open-deck layout accelerates loading and unloading speeds, while an aerodynamic bow design reduces wind resistance by 15% to 20%.
Vision for Green Shipping Corridors
According to the deployment plan, a sister ship named Ning Yuan Dian Peng is scheduled for sea trials in May and official delivery this coming June. Once operating in tandem, both vessels will run on fixed coastal routes, forming a large-scale green maritime transport model.
Affirming the significance of this milestone, Chen Xiaofeng, Chairman of Ningbo Ocean Shipping Co Ltd, stated: “This project demonstrates our commitment to the green transformation of the shipping industry and China’s dual carbon goals.”
