Surpassing all boundaries in the global shipping market, MSC has just set a record by becoming the first ocean carrier to operate 1,000 container ships, simultaneously marking a historic turning point with a generational transfer of power.

According to data from the Asian shipping consultancy Linerlytica, Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) has etched another historic milestone onto its spectacular growth trajectory by becoming the world’s first container carrier to operate 1,000 vessels.

This unprecedented four-figure milestone in maritime history was achieved immediately after the carrier successfully took delivery of the MSC Migsan (an 11,480-TEU vessel) from the Zhoushan Changhong shipyard in China this month.

Generational Power Transfer at the World’s Largest Shipping Empire

Alongside its record-breaking fleet size, MSC – a privately held conglomerate that is currently the world’s largest container shipping line and a leading force in the cruise market – recently announced landmark news regarding its top leadership. Founder Gianluigi Aponte has decided to hand over his entire business empire to his son, Diego, and his daughter, Alexa.

Sharing his thoughts on this succession decision, Mr. Aponte emphasized: “Passing ownership to my children is not only a reflection of their dedication and achievements, but also a continuation of our family’s centuries-long maritime heritage.”

Establishing Unrivaled Dominance on the Global Capacity Map

Hailing from Naples, Italy, the 85-year-old billionaire Aponte laid the foundation for MSC in 1970. The shipping line has experienced a spectacular acceleration, officially overtaking the Danish giant Maersk five years ago to become the world’s largest carrier. At present, MSC’s fleet size is a staggering 57% larger than that of Maersk, its closest competitor.

The picture of MSC’s dominance becomes even clearer when looking at its total capacity. Reaching 7.3 million TEU, MSC’s current carrying capacity is roughly equivalent to the combined fleet sizes of four industry heavyweights: Hapag-Lloyd, Ocean Network Express (ONE), Evergreen, and HMM.

Commenting on MSC’s rapid ascent and expansion strategy, Hua Joo Tan, co-founder of Linerlytica, shared with maritime portal Splash: “What is remarkable about MSC’s achievement is the uncanny timing of its growth since 2020 that coincided with the biggest bull run that the container shipping market has ever seen. And it was done almost entirely through organic growth without any large scale acquisitions.”

MSC’s monumental breakthrough over the past decade has firmly cemented the financial foundation of the Aponte family. Currently, the founder’s family ranks among the top 50 on the Forbes billionaires list and is frequently recognized as the wealthiest family in Switzerland.
