The Port of Montreal celebrates the allocation of US$12.36 million in funding, announced on 25 March by Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Transport and Quebec Lieutenant, for the Pie-IX railway bridge project, facilitated through the National Trade Corridors Fund.
This significant investment is expected to enhance and modernise the Port of Montreal’s transportation infrastructure. Such efforts aim to bolster the efficiency and resilience of the supply chain, crucial not only for Montreal but also for the overall national economy.
The announcement took place during the 2024 strategic forum RDV de l’Est: Transport et logistique, organized by the Chambre de commerce de l’Est de Montréal. Minister Rodriguez emphasized the necessity of adopting a proactive stance to maintain port competitiveness in global markets.
“This initiative confirms the federal government’s commitment to developing trade corridors and Quebec’s economic vitality. It makes it possible to support the Port of Montreal in its key role as an international shipping hub, with a strong focus on sustainable and effective solutions for our transportation network,” commented Julie Gascon, President and CEO of the Port of Montreal.
The project is expected to ensure the long-term viability of the Canadian port’s container terminals while also increasing rail capacity, which is anticipated to boost the port’s commercial value by more than US$738 million annually. Additionally, the project aims to reduce freight costs, generate labour savings, and strengthen modal interconnectivity at the port site.
