Maersk has announced the application of new Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) levels for cargo from China and Hong Kong to East Africa, effective January 12, 2026, with fees reaching up to $1,200 for 40-foot containers.
Maersk has officially announced an upward adjustment to the Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) for shipments moving from Far East Asia to East Africa. This move comes amidst the typical surge in transport demand observed at the beginning of the year.
The adjusted surcharge will apply to cargo originating from ports in China and Hong Kong to destinations in Kenya and Dar es Salaam (Tanzania). The new tariffs will officially take effect on January 12, 2026.
Details of Applicable Rates
Specifically, the new PSS rates set by Maersk are as follows:
For cargo to Kenya:
o $700 per 20-foot container (dry and reefer cargo).
o The fee rises to $1,200 for all 40-foot and 45-foot containers.
For cargo to Dar es Salaam:
o $600 per 20-foot container.
o $1,200 for 40-foot and 45-foot units.
Explaining this revision, Maersk stated that the fee amendment aims to support the maintenance of its global service delivery during the peak period.
Scope and Validity
This updated surcharge applies to both spot bookings and non-spot bookings. The timing of the charge will be based on the Price Calculation Date (PCD) or vessel departure date, depending on the booking type.
The Danish carrier also noted that this PSS is applicable in addition to other local surcharges and contingency surcharges, and will remain in effect until further notice.
