Taiwanese carrier Yang Ming has signed a contract with Hanwha Ocean to build seven 16,000 TEU container ships, which will be LNG dual-fuel and the first of their kind in Taiwan to be designed as ‘ammonia-ready’ for the future.
Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation has just signed a contract with shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean for the construction of seven 16,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships. The agreement was signed by Yang Ming Chairman Chuck Tsai and Hanwha Ocean CEO Charles Kim. The vessels are scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2029.
Pioneering Ammonia-Ready Technology and Advanced LNG Tanks
Each vessel will have a capacity of 15,880 TEU and will be the first ships in Taiwan with the Ammonia Fuel Ready (AFR) Class 1C notation, certified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). This design allows the ships to be converted to use ammonia dual-fuel engines in the future, while also meeting the environmental requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
These ships will also be equipped with the world’s first Type-B LNG fuel tanks with a design pressure of 1.0 bar, developed by Hanwha Ocean and ABS. This new tank type improves safety and efficiency compared to conventional 0.7 bar tanks.
Strengthening the Green Fleet and Competitive Edge
LNG dual-fuel technology can cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by approximately 20%. Yang Ming previously had five 15,500 TEU LNG dual-fuel vessels scheduled for delivery beginning in 2026. Together with this new order, these 12 ships will significantly bolster its ‘green fleet,’ enhance operational flexibility, and improve the company’s global competitiveness.
Adopting the ammonia-ready design positions Yang Ming for future decarbonization while reducing conversion costs. The company stated it will continue to phase out older vessels and expand its clean energy solutions, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and service excellence.
