{"id":87647,"date":"2022-07-22T16:02:03","date_gmt":"2022-07-22T09:02:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/advantage.vn\/vi\/?p=87647"},"modified":"2022-08-20T15:16:19","modified_gmt":"2022-08-20T08:16:19","slug":"downward-pressure-on-rates-demand-or-supply-driven","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/advantage.vn\/en\/downward-pressure-on-rates-demand-or-supply-driven\/","title":{"rendered":"Downward pressure on rates: demand or supply driven?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>[<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/advantage.logistic\">Advantage Logistics<\/a><\/span>] Given the recent decline in spot rates (below what could be explained by normal seasonality), maritime data analysis company Sea-Intelligence sought to answer a very relevant question: the downward pressure of spot rates is caused by supply or demand?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As demand data is notoriously time-lagged, the company used timely and long-term supply-side data to see if there has been a surprising surge in deployed capacity, which could offer an explanation for this decline.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-87650\" src=\"https:\/\/advantage.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/cap.-growth-asia-NAWC-e1658480481637.png\" alt=\"cap.-growth-asia-NAWC\" width=\"600\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/advantage.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/cap.-growth-asia-NAWC-e1658480481637.png 600w, https:\/\/advantage.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/cap.-growth-asia-NAWC-e1658480481637-300x256.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Figure 1 shows the year-to-year capacity growth and the annualized capacity growth (versus 2019) for Asia-North America West Coast, while figure 2 shows the same for Asia-North Europe.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For the Asia-North America West Coast, the developments are quite curious,&#8221; said Alan Murphy, CEO of Sea-Intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Capacity growth could have made the case for falling spot rates, but given that annual growth has been below 5%, it appears that the current downward trend is due to a reduction in the demand side.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-87649\" src=\"https:\/\/advantage.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/cap.-growth-Asia-NEUR-e1658480423505.png\" alt=\"cap.-growth-Asia-NEUR\" width=\"600\" height=\"510\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis in itself should be quite worrying for the carriers, especially as we are headed into the traditional peak season.
