All containers were leased to Evergreen, its largest customer.<\/p>\n<p>There is an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/container-news.com\/port-congestion-caused-by-chronic-box-shortages-in-asia-europe-and-us\/\">acute shortage of containers in Asia<\/a>, as empty containers have been slow to return to the ports of origin from North America. This was due to Transpacific rates hitting a 10-year high in September and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/container-news.com\/shippers-allege-lines-are-refusing-to-carry-us-export-cargo\/\">lower backhaul volumes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Its observation of the industry trend enabled Evergreen to pre-empt the container crunch and the company was not as badly affected by the equipment shortage as compared with its peers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-79362\" src=\"https:\/\/advantage.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/EverSmart_Web_Bay70SlowCollapse-e1615174457613.jpg\" alt=\"Evergreen unit orders more containers\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/advantage.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/EverSmart_Web_Bay70SlowCollapse-e1615174457613.jpg 600w, https:\/\/advantage.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/EverSmart_Web_Bay70SlowCollapse-e1615174457613-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In January, Evergreen itself announced plans to order more than 52,000 containers for over US$45 million, after placing some orders in December 2020.<\/p>\n<p>With sufficient equipment, Evergreen was able to take advantage of the unprecedented spike in freight rates during Q3 2020, enabling the Taiwanese liner operator to achieve a net profit of TW$12.6 billion (US$434.11 million) in the first nine months of 2020.
